What were the causes of Franco-Prussian war 1870-71




There were many causes, but the following were the main causes:

  • France wanted to reinstate its glory
  • France did not like the growing influence of Prussia
  • Germany wanted  Prince Leopold to rule Spain, and France did not like
  • French Ambassador asked William 1 to reassure him that he will not support Prince Leopold to become the ruler of Spain
  • William 1 refused to give this assurance
  • Distorted version of  Ems telegram was published by Bismark
  • The content of Ems telegram led France to believe that their Ambassador was insulted
  • France got angry and declared war.
