IELTS General Training Write Task 1: Letter to complaint on heating system in hotel

You recently stayed in a hotel in a large city. The weather was very unusual for the time of year and the heating / cooling system in the hotel was quite inadequate.

Write a letter to the manager of the hotel. In your letter:

  • give details of what went wrong
  • explain what you had to do to overcome the problem at the time
  • say what action you would like the manager to take

Dear Sir/ Madam,

I am writing this letter to express my dissatisfaction with the heating and cooling system installed in the hotel. I stayed at Marriot for 3 nights from March 21st to 23rd, 2019 and this was most terrible experience of my life at staying in any hotel.

I got a chance to stay there during my stay in Islamabad while I was there for my official conference. The thing that really bothered me was the malfunctioning of heating system in my room. Surprisingly, a severe snowstorm hit the city on the day when I landed to Islamabad. Because it was so cold, I thought of heating my room. However, the heating unit in my room totally failed to provide me comfort. On making the complaint, the technician did visit the room, but did not take any appropriate measures to rectify the problems. Moreover, I was not even shifted to another room because all the rooms were already booked.

Every night when I used to return hotel after long hectic day it used to be a challenge for me to cope with the temperature problem. I slept in my coat and socks during those 3 nights. I tried to maintain my body temperature by using hot running water in the wash room. In any case, my trip ended up leaving me with severe cold.

At time of checking out, I could not make a complaint regarding such abysmal service because I had to take my flight. However, now I am writing to request you to refund my charges or compensate me by sending a voucher that can be used during my next visit. Otherwise, I am prepared to take my complaint to higher authorities.

I am anticipating a prompt response.

Yours truly,
